Sometimes it is about you

Monday, June 28th, 2010

We all seek validation and approval in some capacity. Most of the time it is irrelevant.

If your specialty is events or information technology or advertising, why the need to seek approval from a manager whose specialty this isn’t?

If you explain the idea, rather than the product, you achieve useful feedback. If you show a product without context, you won’t.

Rather than looking to be approved, maybe you should aim to be understood.

Your organisation relies on you to be a specialist. From time to time they need you to make it about you.

Stacking

A friend of mine is a former Australian bodybuilding champion. He used to refer to stacking the supplements he used, meaning that he would combine different supplements that would work together to boost the effectiveness of each (all legal btw).

What do you do during your morning tea/lunch/afternoon tea breaks? Does it help the guts of your day?

Instead of tuning out during your breaks, you could change stations. Maybe in your lunch break you could take singing or dancing lessons, maybe some yoga in your morning or afternoon tea break.

Try stacking your day. How you use your breaks may determine the quality of your day.

The grey area

Flexibility and being open minded is critical to reaching goals, no argument here, but sometimes you have to back yourself and stand your ground.

Grey areas are nice because they allow for compromise – everyone gets their way.

But grey areas are permanent. Once the colour’s merge, extracting them’s a war.
